Underwater Relaxation | ft. MFT's "Mermazing"

Hi everyone, thank you for stopping by. I hope you are having a great day.

Today I wanted to share the third card I created using the "Mermazing" set from My Favorite Things. This company never fails to amaze me in how they can continue to create the cutest images. Not only are they sweet and cute, they offer a huge variety in their colourability (yeah, I just made that word).

To begin, I stamped the seated mermaid from MFT's "Mermazing" stamp set. I then masked her off and stamped the rocks, then masked those as well. These images are stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black ink on 110lb Copic-friendly cardstock.

I then used Antique Linen and Gathered Twigs Distress ink to create a sandy bottom. I used Tumbled Glass, Salty Ocean and just a bit of Faded Jeans to create the watery area in the back. I then used some clean clear water and splattered the background and patted it dry with some paper towel. There were too many splatters for the look I was going for so I went back over both areas with the lightest Distress inks so that the splatter faded away a bit.

I then used a scrap of paper to protect the area above her and used more distress inks to darken the background. I wanted it to look as though there were a sunbeam coming from above and shining on her.

Once everything was completely dry, I stamped the fish using CTMH Whisper ink, the kelp using Olive ink, and the coral using Goldrush and Autumn Terracotta ink.

I then removed all the masks and coloured the images in with Copic markers. To finish it off, I used some white star confetti from Recollections to add a bit more shimmer in the sunbeam.

Even though I was done doing what I wanted to do, it didn't look finished. So I cut a frame using Lawn Fawn's "Stitched Rectangle" dies, and used Gathered Twigs Distress ink to make the frame look like wood.

Finally, after much ado, I added the greeting. I wasn't going to add a greeting at all, but it just didn't feel right without one.

It wasn't until editing that I saw the splatter had faded out way more than I wanted it to; but I promise in real life it provides a subtle interest to the background.

I hope you like today's card and are inspired to create something of your own. If you haven't all ready, please follow me over on the right sidebar. 3. I was looking through the cards in the SSS challenge and I was intrigued by the way your light was shining down on your mermaid so I had to come take a closer look, I wasn't disappointed, your card is absolutely gorgeous Trina! You have inspired me to give that a go. Did you also use a white pencil or something to get the lines seemingly going downwards? I love it, I love your style, it's similar to mine (I've had a peek at some of your other blog posts) so I'm your latest follower :)

    1. Hi Lucy! Welcome aboard, I'm very happy that you've joined me. It means a lot to me.

For the sunbeams, once I got my lightest layer down, I used a scrap of paper to mask the area for the beams then lay down my darker colours. Then, I used the same scrap and moved it slightly, shaded with my medium colour, moved it again and shaded, rinse and repeat until it looked the way I wanted it to. I didn't use a white pencil, but that's a fantastic idea if it gets a little too dark.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
